How to Consult the I Ching

The traditional three-coin method

1
Form your question
The I Ching responds best to open questions: "What do I need to understand about situation X?" or "What is the wisest course regarding Y?" Avoid yes/no framing.
2
Cast the coins
Three coins are tossed six times. Heads = 3, tails = 2. The total determines each line: an even sum gives a broken line (yin), an odd sum gives a solid line (yang). Six throws build one hexagram.
3
Read the interpretation
Our system handles this automatically. You'll receive a full interpretation of the hexagram and any moving lines — the key to understanding the deeper meaning for your situation.

The History of the I Ching

The I Ching (易經 — "Book of Changes") is one of the oldest texts in human history, dated to 3000–1000 BCE. It began as an oracle based on the crack patterns found on turtle shells and animal bones.

Confucius studied the I Ching throughout his entire life and said: "Give me a few more years and I may finally understand this book fully." Today more than 1,000 scholarly commentaries on the I Ching exist from around the world.

Carl Jung used the I Ching in his psychoanalytic practice, calling it a tool of synchronicity — the meaningful connection between apparently unrelated events. He wrote the foreword to the German edition of the book in 1950.

Unlike most oracles, the I Ching does not predict fate — it describes the current situation and points toward the wisest course of action. It is a philosophical compass, not a crystal ball.

Julia M., Bristol
★★★★☆
"I started exploring the I Ching six months ago. It's a complete philosophical system, not just divination. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to think more clearly."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the I Ching and where does it come from?
The I Ching is a 3,000-year-old Chinese system — originally a book of philosophy, also used for divination. It's built on 64 hexagrams, each describing a different state or moment in the flow of things.
How should I phrase a question for the I Ching?
Open-ended works best: "What do I need to understand about this situation?" or "What's the most useful perspective on this decision?" Avoid yes/no framing — the I Ching doesn't really do binaries.
What do the hexagrams mean?
Each hexagram describes one of 64 recurring human situations — the energy at play, what it calls for, and what to watch out for. Reading one is less like getting an answer and more like being handed a lens.
Do I need to know Chinese philosophy to use the I Ching?
No. The interpretations here are in plain modern language. The source texts are dense — knowing them helps, but it's not the starting point.
